Morrisons has confirmed that 16 of its stores are closing today (April 16) as part of a wider company shake-up in a blow to Britain's high streets and retail parks.Last month, the supermarket chain announced its restructuring plans which will impact the popular brand's convenience stores and cafes across the country.This comes amid the ongoing trend of store closures that have swept the UK in recent years following the Covid-19 pandemic.In a statement, the supermarket giant said: "Morrisons has made the difficult decision to close some Morrisons Daily stores, some of which contain Post Offices."We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause for our customers and apologise for the short notification as these branches close between April 9 and May 14. "We have reviewed Post Office provision in these areas and for most of these affected branches we are advertising the vacancies."Overall, today's closures are included in Morrisons decision to axe 52 cafés, and 100 other in-store services like 12 florists and four pharmacies.Furthermore, the company overhaul will see 35 meat counters and 35 fish counters axed, according to the Metro.It is understood that 396 employee roles at Morrisons will also be cut as part of the company's wider restructuring plans.However, reports suggest workers in these jobs will be deployed to other parts of the business.At the time of the closure announcement, Morrisons CEO Rami Baitiéh broke down his vision for the company.He said: "The changes we are announcing today are a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth.
